I often get defensive when I read the word “always”, and find myself searching for arguments in the form of exceptions. Did Washington release his slaves in response to demands or out of kindness (or in post mortem repentance)? Can enlightenment happen without confrontation?
I’ll admit it’s my own personal linguistic hang-up that I don’t like using never or always. But to me, excessive hyperbole can often be proven false, which undermines the truth of the point.
